Preacher Man

There’s a preacher on the corner, preachin’ some kind of news
Every now and then he takes a break and plays the blues
On a rusty harmonica, and an old guitar
Then, when he starts to play, it’s like watchin’ a fallen star

A star who has fallen, a star who still seems to shine
When he starts singin’, he goes and stops the hands of time
Everybody stands around, under some kind of trance
Then he has ‘em dancin’ in the rain, and my, they do like to dance

No one knows who he is
Or, knows where he came from
No one knows where he’s going
And soon, I think he’ll be gone

I’ve listened to his sermon
But I’ve heard it all before
I wish he’d play another song
It’s the music, I want more

Hey, preacher
Preacher man
Won’t you teach me somethin’
About who I am

Hey, preacher
Lay it on the line
Don’t care how dark it gets
Don’t give a damn

The preacher comes every mornin’, stays till’ late at night
If he’s not preachin’ or singin’, he’s sleepin’ until light
No matter rain or shine, no matter sun or moon
You’ll see him sittin’ on the corner, singin’ some old tune

Is he religious? Does he think the end is nigh?
Whatever his belief, I hope he never waves goodbye
I hope he sits on that corner, sings for the rest of his days
For he seems to have a soul, and in the end, that’s what pays

No one knows who he is
Or knows where he came from
No one knows where he’s going
And soon I think he’ll be gone

I’ve listened to his preachin’
Heard it one too many times
I’ve told you it’s the music
That sends shivers down the spine

Hey, preacher
Preacher man
Won’t you tell me
How to fix

This reality
Ain’t no good for me
An illusion
Playin’ tricks
